Andersonville Neighborhood History

In the wake of the Chicago fire in 1871, wooden homes were outlawed in Chicago. Swedish immigrants, many of whom who could not afford to build with stone or brick, began to move outside of the city. New Swedish immigrants continued to move to Andersonville, settling in the newly built homes surrounding Clark Street.

Andersonville has retained its Swedish flavor, continuing to be considered a Swedish neighborhood. With many locally owned business, and a history of family-friendly housing, Andersonville was rediscovered in the 80s as a prime area for families to grow, and many new residents moved in looking for that safe, community-focused environment.

Events, Activities, Lifestyle, and Dining Options In Andersonville

If there is one thing that Andersonville is known for, beyond the Swedish heritage, it is the number of locally-owned businesses. The majority of business offerings in the neighborhood are locally owned, many being single location. A great start to that is m.henry, a bakery and café open for breakfast and lunch. South of there, on Clark, is Calo Ristorante, serving Italian staples since 1963. Vegetarians can find an expansive menu at Mediterranean & Middle Eastern spot Andies Restaurant.

After dinner, Andersonville keeps going with spots like Simon’s Tavern, a long-standing neighborhood bar featuring their signature glögg mulled wine. For those not looking for drinks, Kopi serves sandwiches and bakery items with coffee in a Bohemian café. West of the main drag on Clark is one of the highest rated spots in Andersonville, Joie De Vine, known for serving unique and handmade cocktails that keep people coming back. If you can’t decide between lots of beer choices, keep out of Little Bad Wolf, the stock more than 100 varieties of the brew.

Andersonville Neighborhood Culture, Shopping, and Lifestyle

Andersonville shopping is as unique as anywhere in the city. From retro-hipster women’s clothier Presence to geek draw Alleycat Comics, and thrift shop The Brown Elephant. The last supports the Howard Brown Health Center in nearby Buena Park. p>There is also a selection of Swedish shops, like the somewhat obviously named Swedish Bakery, breakfast & lunch spot Svea Restaurant, and Scandanavian deli and grocer Erickson's Delicatessen.

A key cultural feature of the neighborhood is the Swedish American Museum, highlighting the contributions of the Swedish immigrants to the Chicago community and development. The museum was opened in 1976 with a dedication by Carl XVI Gustaf, King of Sweden.
