Lakeview East Neighborhood History

According to local legend, the Lakeview East area got both name and the initial interest due to the Hotel Lake View, named for the panoramic views of Lake Michigan – it was about the only structure in the area. When an outbreak of cholera sent Chicago residents fleeing north, many of them stayed in the Lakeview area, and by 1857 the town of Lake View was founded. In those early days, Lake View was known for celery, being one of the main sources for celery in the US.

Lake View was absorbed into Chicago in 1889, and became the Lakeview neighborhood. Lakeview East came into its own as a center of LGBT activity, and much of the neighborhood is locally known as ‘Boystown’. Lakeview East is home to Chicago’s Pride Parade, and has become a destination address for the LGBT community. Lakeview East is part of the larger Lakeview Historic District.
