Bucktown Neighborhood History

Originally settled by Polish immigrants, the name Bucktown comes from the large number of goats kept by these early residents. The original Polish term for the neighborhood was Kozie Prery (Goat Prairie). By the 1910s, Bucktown was often known as ‘Little Poland’ or the Polish Downtown – even as the makeup was changing away from the uniquely Polish foundation. The demographics swung again after World War II, when as many as 150,000 Poles arrived in the area, settling in a community where they felt most at home.

In the history of the Bucktown neighborhood, many of the streets have been subjected to multiple name changes – from the original Polish names, to more Germanic names, to very English names (during the renaming frenzy of WW I). The neighborhood plugged along without much activity until the 1990s, when it began a rapid transition into one of the hotter areas of the city. Now home to artists, young working singles, and a stylish restaurant scene, Bucktown has come through the years better than ever.
