More About Gold Coast
History of Chicago’s Gold Coast Neighborhood
Born from the flames of the Chicago Fire, the history of the Gold Coast dates to 1882, when Potter Palmer, of Palmer House fame, built a home on reclaimed swampland near what is now 1350 N Lake Shore Drive. Palmer was soon joined by many of the city's elite, giving the new district its name.
The entire neighborhood is entered in the National Register of Historic Places and areas within the neighborhood, like the Astor Street District, are similarly designated in their own right. The neighborhood is focused on elegance, luxury, and ensuring a beautiful and breathtaking appearance.
Dining and Nightlife in Chicago’s Gold Coast
Few areas of the city lend themselves so well to a full-day experience as the Gold Coast. From breakfast to nightcaps, with a full day of beach fun, shopping, admiring the architecture, or just people-watching, the Gold Coast can provide you with all you need.
Dining options abound – from the casual to the formal, and everything in between. Some of your options in the Gold Coast could include starting the day with breakfast at Hash House A Go Go for some signature ‘twisted farm food’ offerings, like sage fried chicken Benedict, sausage gravy pot pie, or even their signature meatloaf with eggs, potatoes and a biscuit! A block over is the more upscale 3rd Coast Cafe. Offering a breakfast menu that includes Chicago style smoked Polish sausage, bagels and lox, and their signature scone, 3rd Coast is ideal for a stylish business breakfast.
Lunch and dinner options include Gibson’s Steakhouse, for fine, aged steaks and excellent sides and Hugo’s Frog Bar or Ra Sushi for seafood lovers. For a more casual dinner, Velvet Taco can’t be beat (try the Cubano!).
Hitting the nightlife after dinner is also a breeze, with Chicago landmarks like Butch McGuire’s, The Original Mother’s and Mother’s Too, occupying a single block on Division.
Gold Coast Culture, Shopping, and Lifestyle
When it comes to filling the day between amazing food, getting a bit of beach time at Oak Street Beach is a great way to enjoy nature, and the magnificence of the lakefront. If shopping is your thing, the Gold Coast has you covered - from new boutiques like Vineyard Vines to upscale chains like Neiman Marcus to the Kate Spade and Prada stores on Oak Street, shopping in the Gold Coast offers a selection you can’t find elsewhere in the city.
Cultural offerings include the Division Street Farmer’s Market, architecture tours, Evening on Astor, and numerous art installations along the tree-shaded walks.
We suggest the following hotspots in the neighborhood, as a great sample of what the Gold Coast has to offer. Walking Astor Street for the amazing homes and historic feel – start at North Blvd to see the Cardinal’s Residence (exterior only, it is a private residence), and end on Division. Take in lunch at Velvet Taco, grab a drink and take a rest under the trees in Mariano Park, and wind down with fine dining at Lawrey’s The Prime Rib.
