Lincoln Park Neighborhood History

The Lincoln Park neighborhood, named for President Lincoln, was settled by German immigrants who turned the existing swampy ground into farmland. Farm-centered industry followed, and then came the Fire. In the wake of the fire, the area was rebuilt as a residential area. Half of the residences in the current neighborhood date to this period. Suburban flight in the 1950s led to the neighborhood becoming a prime address for a younger, urban crowd.

The Lincoln Park of today is one of the most consistently sought-after neighborhoods. Trendy, hip, and exciting, Lincoln Park is the place to be.

One of the attractions at the zoo is a burr oak dated to 1830 – three years older than Chicago itself. Next to the zoo is the Lincoln Park Conservatory, and just north of there is the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, making Lincoln Park a great spot for nature education and relaxation.
