General Home and Housing Types Found In Chicago’s Noble Square

The high-rise condo towers of the city center are not found here. The homes here are residential single-family homes, 2 and 3 flat units, and low-rise multi-unit buildings. Condos can be found, but they are rehabs, not new constructions or towers. Homes in the Noble Square neighborhood can range between $149,900 and $700,000.

Noble Square Neighborhood History

Noble Square is something of a mystery, without a strong historical narrative. Listed as ‘West Town’ on 19th century census records, and often split between neighboring neighborhoods, there isn’t even a record of where the name comes from! Based on the surrounding areas, the likely initial residents of the Noble Square area were Polish and other Eastern European immigrants. The area was developed after the fire, and was likely occupied by middle to upper-class citizens. The area has maintained that middle-upper level of resident through modern times, and is a favorite destination for new families.

Events, Activities, Lifestyle, and Dining Options In Noble Square

For a small geographic area, Noble Square has a ton of highly rated restaurants. It should be called Nibble Square. At the risk of sounding like a Buzzfeed list, some of the highest rated dining options include modern dining standout Ruxbin, Mexican fusion pioneer Mexique, classic dining spot The Bedford, Mexican seafood specialist El Barco Mariscos, Polish cuisine from Podhalanka, and wild game specialist The Frontier. And that’s just the ones at the top of the online ratings game. There are easily a couple dozen more scattered about the neighborhood.

Nightlife in Noble Square is a bit more sparse. Some of the more notable standouts include The Chipp Inn which dates to 1897, and dance club Funky Olive.

The lifestyle in Noble Square is very much focused on residential living. The sorts of all-city parties and events found in the downtown areas are absent here, making this a very relaxed area for the residents. Block parties and other unpublished events are sure to abound, but are intended for the locals.

Noble Square Neighborhood Culture, Shopping, and Lifestyle

In so strongly residential an area, the shopping and lifestyle areas are limited to stretches of Milwaukee, Chicago, and Grand. But along those, some places jump out at you. Open since 1918, Occult Bookstore may well be the oldest bookshop dedicated to the esoteric and occult. One of the more unique Noble Square offerings is DEFIBRILLATOR performance art gallery, with discussions and performances weekly. Central to the neighborhood is Eckhard Park, opened in 1907 to provide some natural space in the crowded neighborhood. The Park is credited in some sources with being the source of the neighborhood’s name – which would make a lot more sense if the ‘Noble’ was found anywhere in the park name. As it stands, the closest connection is the fact that the park, home to baseball fields, a natatorium, and other playground staples, happens to be roughly square.
