General Home and Housing Types Found In Chicago’s River West

Like many of the central neighborhoods, River West is mostly high and midrise towers, with a strong condo focus. Recently, there has been a surge in three-flats and loft conversion adding to the mix. Homes in the River West neighborhood can range between $172,500 and $600,000.

River West Neighborhood History

In a city named ‘Hog Butcher to the World’, the area that would become River West was known for meatpacking houses and wholesale markets. The meatpacking is mostly gone, but the warehouses remain. Many of which became lofts for the hip and trendy. There is still an industrial vibe to the neighborhood, with trucks moving merchandise in and out of the remaining warehouses, and the Chicago Tribune’s printing facility.

Events, Activities, Lifestyle, and Dining Options In River West

Dining is a hot topic in Chicago, and River West’s Sepia is a great example of why. Headed by Andrew Zimmerman (not the one eating lutefisk on TV), Sepia offers a menu with such gems as Tea Smoked Duck Breast and chicken with sage sausage and grilled watermelon. Reservations will definitely be needed here. Simpler fare can be had at the Paramount Room. A five time ‘Bib Gourmand’ award winner, Paramount Room is known for steak, burgers, and pasta dishes of exceptional quality.

The nightlife in River West is at the same level as the dining scene – vibrant, and upwardly trending. Take Exit, billing themselves as Chicago’s original punk bar, Exit is going strong with a punk vibe and two floors providing music from punk and metal all the way across the spectrum to house and new wave. Exit is not for the faint of heart. Seriously. For a more sedate experience, and less damage to your hearing, there is ESTATE Ultra Bar and Yacht Club. Featuring dining as well as multiple themed rooms and 4000 square feet of rooftop, ESTATE is where the trendy go for the evening.

River West Neighborhood Culture, Shopping, and Lifestyle

River West offers a thriving gallery scene, and art of all kinds is available to be admired. Focusing on art by women, Woman Made Gallery not only showcases more traditional art forms, but also hosts performance artists. Focusing on outsider and wildly non-traditional art, The Center for Intuitive & Outsider Art provides a showcase for self-taught artists and those working far outside the mainstream.

The industrial nature and history of River West shows in the number of automotive dealers and repair shops alone Milwaukee Ave. Heading a bit east, you find some other offerings, such as InoPrints, a print shop and design studio. You can also find Zip Fit Denim, who offer jean fitting services and custom denim searches to find your perfect pair.
