Roscoe Village Neighborhood History
Settled originally by workers and vendors for the long-gone Riverview Park amusement development, Roscoe Village is one of the Chicago neighborhoods that appears on no official map, but is still well defined by the residents and character of the area. Enjoying steady development until the post-WWII years, when interstate highways boosted the suburbs, Roscoe Village hit some hard times in the 70s. The neighborhood rebounded in the 1980s, and had become one of the city’s most desirable addresses.
Events, Activities, Lifestyle, and Dining Options In Roscoe Village
The dining and nightlife scene in Roscoe Village is located almost wholly on Roscoe Ave, between Leavitt and Ravenswood. In this small (6 block) space are some excellent options for the foodie in us all. Leading the pack is vegetarian restaurant Victory’s Banner, a breakfast and lunch establishment serving an eclectic menu, with eggs and meatless burgers. Down the street is Turkish restaurant Turquoise Restaurant, with excellent modern Mediterranean cuisine.
While not known for nightlife, Roscoe Village still has some options for the after-dinner crowd. The Village Tap offers a bar with some gastropub dining options as well. Other options with a good reputation are the Four Moon Tavern, and dog-friendly Four Treys.
Roscoe Village Neighborhood Culture, Shopping, and Lifestyle
Shopping options are a bit more prevalent, with a strong skew towards the vintage or resale shop. Some other options include Roscoe Village Bikes; Zane & Zara’s Pet Boutique, an independent pet shop that offers all-natural feed & treats, plus bedding & accessories; and appointment-only custom jeweler Pearls & Cake. Sadly, the cake is a lie.
On the more artistic front is the Wooden Sign Company, which is exactly what is says – they hand make wooden signs for businesses. The craftsmanship is amazing.
