Learn About South Loop

South Loop Real Estate Market

South Loop displays a diverse mix of urban real estate landscapes. Moving west from Grant Park, high rise condo buildings share blocks with various businesses, like hotels, restaurants, and gyms.

Further from the shores of Lake Michigan, South Loop's central portion is divided between Printer's Row and Dearborn Park. Once the hub of the midwest's printing industry, Printer's Row is now home to trendy loft conversions and various fashionable stores and eateries.

Dearborn Park is a green neighborhood built on the old rail lines extending from the historic Dearborn Station. This planned community is an excellent example of integrated urban development, featuring parks, services, and modern townhomes.

Moving further west, the few blocks extending along the rail lines from LaSalle Street Station blend high rise condos with a number of still-developing spaces. And along South Loop's western edge, the resort-like River City condo building stands on the banks of the Chicago River.

Overall, the South Loop area offers numerous high rise condo and townhome options for the single professional, as well as for families. Converted warehouses and factories now boast open-concept residential spaces, with modern luxury features and sleek, textured design.

Many of the high rise buildings display classic style, and newer ones either emulate this in red-brick or stone, or go for the modern glass aesthetic. Either way, the South Loop area just looks good, blending the best of futuristic elegance, and well-established urban understatement.

South Loop Area Information

The northern boundary of South Loop is widely agreed to be along Congress Parkway. The southern boundary is less well-established, following the residential developments south of Roosevelt Road.

The eastern and western edges track the shores of Lake Michigan and the Chicago River.

South Loop is located directly south of downtown Chicago, and north of rest the Near North Side. The southern portion of Grant Park lies to the east, and the University of Illinois Chicago across the river to the west.

South Loop History

One of the first residential areas in Chicago, the South Loop area has undergone many changes since the city's first founding. After the initial residential expansion, much of the area was given over to railway infrastructure. The city's burgeoning printing industry also moved into the area between Clark and State Streets, and an infamous vice district grew up around the rail yards

After the economy left these industries behind, South Loop became a low-rent area. However, development began anew in the 1970s thanks to a collection of enterprising business leaders, and in Dearborn Park was opened in 1979. Since then, many historic buildings have been converted into modern residential units.

Today, South Loop is known for its highly desirable condos, music venues, theaters, museums, and large selection of restaurants.
