Streeterville Chicago Real Estate

The Streeterville neighborhood is among the most upscale and desirable areas in Chicago, but it has been the source of some dispute since the 1880s. From who owned the land, to where the neighborhood actually is, Streeterville is a local historian's dream. It's location near the Magnificent Mile and Lake Michigan combined with the gorgeous condo buildings that comprise the majority of the Streeterville real estate market are what makes it one of the most attractive parts of the city. Streeterville is located entirely in the 60611 ZIP code.

Streeterville Homes, Condos, and Lofts

Almost completely high-rise, with a mix of pre and post WWII construction, with some buildings by famed architect Mies van der Rohe tossed in for flavor. These towers feature condo and apartment homes, with rentals starting around $1,700 for a studio, and condo homes starting near $150,000.

History of Chicago's Streeterville Neighborhood

There could be an entire website for just this section. According to the legend (which is better than the cold facts), back in 1886 George Streeter, attempting to start a gun running business, ran his boat aground on a sandbar just off Michigan Avenue. He decided to stay there, and converted the boat into a house. As the city rebuilt from the fire, debris and construction waste was dumped into the lake, between the sandbar and the shoreline. Which filled the area in, creating 186 acres of ‘new land’. Since the official survey of the city didn’t include this new land, Streeter claimed it for himself, as the District of Lake Michigan. Needless to say, this didn’t last, and several years, and more than a few court and gun battles later (1918, to be exact), Streeter was finally removed, and ownership confirmed to the city. Streeter died in 1921.

Chicago has remembered the local eccentric with a statue at Navy Pier, and a neighborhood bearing his name. Which is, it has to be said, more than San Francisco has done for Emperor Norton.

Dining and Nightlife Options In Streeterville

Starting at the top, check out the Signature Room on the 95th floor of the Hancock Building. Unreal views of the lake and city meet upscale cuisine for an ideal combination. For the more touristy experience, Navy Pier offers Harry Caray's Tavern, and Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Bar & Grill. Beyond the Pier, Streeterville offers French cuisine from Les Nomades, tapas from Emilio's (try the Albondigas De Cordero).

Nightlife in Streeterville is as eclectic as the neighborhood. From specialty places like Japanese-meets-speakeasy Murasaki Sake Lounge, to Irish pub D4, and the popular Lucky Strike Chicago bowling alley and bar.

Streeterville Culture, Shopping, and Lifestyle

Navy Pier is a huge part of the Streeterville experience, with attractions ranging from the Ferris Wheel (soon to be bigger and better), to the Chicago Children’s Museum, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, and the Driehaus Gallery of Stained Glass (totally worth the trip all on its own). The Pier is also the site of the annual Tall Ships Festival. Don’t let the myth that Chicagoans never go to Navy Pier fool you – we do, and we love it. Even if we don’t admit it.

Shopping in Streeterville is high end and luxury. Sharing a section of the Magnificent Mile with River North, Streeterville also can claim the renowned Water Tower Place luxury shopping mall. If you have a daughter, you doubtless already know Water Tower from the American Girl Place store.
